Welcome Back Students Turners Falls High School


Dear TFHS Parents/Guardians,

On behalf of the teachers and staff of Turners Falls High School, I welcome you to the 2021-2022 school year! I am excited to begin the year, and look forward to working in partnership with you to ensure that our students can reach their highest potential.

This year, the focus of our work will be to get back to a more normal school year with all students in attendance. We hope and expect to have many of our typical events in place, along with a wide array of sports and activities being offered to our students. We understand that with so much remote learning in the recent past, we will have a lot of work to do, but we are up to the task and are energized by the return of our students. Below you will find a variety of information to help us get started.

A few important dates to begin the year:

  • Thursday, August 19th 5:00-6:30 p.m.: High School Orientation for incoming 9th graders and other new students
  • Thursday, August 26th: First day of school for all grades (7:45-2:25)
  • Wednesday, September 15th: Student Photo Day
  • Thursday, September 16th: TFHS Open House, 6:30-8:00 p.m.

Safety Guidelines:

In order to ensure the safety of our students and staff, everyone will be required to wear masks. All students are expected to be in school each and every day; this will allow our teachers and staff members to do their best work in moving instruction forward. We will be practicing safe distancing in the classrooms and in the cafeteria. A communication with the formal plans will be coming from the Superintendent and will be posted on the website.

Bus Transportation:

The bus routes are in the design phase, and we will have them up on the website as soon as possible. There is no “sign up” for bussing this year. Students that attend TFHS and live at least 1.5 miles from their home school will be included in the bus routes. The routes are being built according to our enrollment in each building, and once the routes are put together, they will be posted for families to view. Late bus service may begin the second full week of school, Mondays-Thursdays, but more information on that will be coming.

Meals at School:

All students at GFMS and TFHS will continue have free meals provided every day for both breakfast and lunch. Families will continue to have the option to put money on student accounts through https://www.payschoolscentral.com. Details can be found under the Parents tab on the district website. PayForIt.net can still be used for the purchase of a la carte items.


Family Communication:

We use a system called PlusPortals to support home-school communication. All of our communication (including report cards) will be managed through PlusPortals. Please be sure that we have the most current email address on file so that you are able to receive all of our communication. Parents can access PlusPortals by using the link under the Parents tab on the district website, or by going directly to the web address, which is www.plusportals.com/GMRSD. If you need assistance in accessing your PlusPortal account, please call our main office at 413-863-7200. If you do not have internet access, please notify the main office so that we can provide you with paper copies of our communications. We will also be using our Facebook page and the website to post photos and updates. We will continue to use our automated phone and email system to share important information. Again, please be sure that we have your current email address and phone number. I will be in regular communication with families, and I would encourage families to reach out to me or Mr. Kotright with any questions or concerns.

School Supplies and Schedules:

  • At TFHS, each teacher will let students know what supplies are needed in class. For the first day, students are asked to bring something to write with and an assignment notebook or planner.
  • Student schedules will soon be available on PlusPortals. We will communicate via email and phone to let you know when they are available. In the meantime, please contact the School Counseling Office at 413-863-7203 if you have any questions.

Supporting Your Child:

While we recognize and admire that our high school students are progressing towards independence, guidance and support by both family and school staff is essential to their success. To this end, please be sure that your child is on time and prepared for school each day. We will be utilizing our automated telephone system to call the primary number listed for a student who is marked absent, unexcused, or tardy unexcused, each day before 10:00 a.m. Calls will begin in the second full week of school, after the Add/Drop period ends on Friday, September 3rd and students’ schedules are settled. If you need to report an excused absence, please call 413-863-7200.
