GREAT FALLS MIDDLE SCHOOL

Loren Messina, Principal

Dear GFMS Parents/Guardians,

On behalf of the teachers and staff of Great Falls Middle School, we welcome you to the 2024-2025 school year!  We hope that your family has had a relaxing and enjoyable summer and we look forward to seeing your students very soon.  At GFMS, we are excited to begin the year, and we look forward to working in partnership with you to ensure that our students can reach their highest potential.

COVID Guidelines:

Students will not be required to wear masks.  All students are certainly permitted to wear masks, and parents and guardians will be making that determination with their kids at home.  Each family’s decision will be respected by all members of the school community.

Bus Transportation:

The bus routes continue to be finalized, and we will have them up on the website (gmrsd.org under the “parents” tab) as soon as possible.  There is no “sign up” for bussing, and students who attend TFHS and live at least 1.5 miles from school will be included in the bus routes.  The routes are being built according to our enrollment in each building, and once the routes are compiled, they will be posted on our website for families to view.  Late bus service may begin the second full week of school, but more information on that will be coming.

Meals at School:

We are a CEP district (Community Eligible Provision) which means that all students at GMRSD will be able to participate in FREE meals for breakfast and lunch. This also means no eligibility applications are required by the food service department. Families will continue to have the option to put money on student accounts through PayForIt.net. Details can be found under the Parents tab on the district website. PayForIt.net can be used for purchasing a second lunch, but we will no longer be offering la carte items. All students will receive a bar code for their lunches. HS students can put them in the plastic holder for their ID’s. The menus will be online for community members to view.

Family Communication:

We will continue to utilize PlusPortals to support home-school communication. All of our communication will be managed through PlusPortals, so please be sure that we have the most current email address and phone number on file so that you are able to receive all of our communication.  Parents can access PlusPortals by using the link under the Parents tab on the district website, or by going directly to the web address, which is www.plusportals.com/GMRSD. If you need assistance in accessing your PlusPortals account, please call our main office at 413-863-7300. If you do not have internet access, please notify the main office so that we can provide you with paper copies of our communications. We will also be using our Facebook page and the website (gmrsd.org) to post information, updates, and photos.  I will be in regular communication with families, and I would encourage families to reach out to myself, Ms. Messina, with any questions or concerns.

School Supplies:

We will be providing supplies for GFMS students this year.

Supporting Your Child:

While we recognize and admire that our students are progressing towards independence, guidance and support by both family and school staff is essential to their success.  To this end, please be sure that your child is on time and prepared for school each day.  We will be utilizing our automated telephone system to call the primary number listed for a student who is marked absent, unexcused, or tardy unexcused, each day before 10:00 a.m. Calls will begin in the second full week of school. If you need to report an excused absence, please call 413-863-7300.

Please contact the school with any questions. We look forward to welcoming new students on August 29th.

Sincerely,

Loren Messina

Principal

Superintendent’s Corner

Dear GMRSD Community,

It is with profound honor and sincere gratitude that I introduce myself as your newly appointed Interim Superintendent. My name is Tari N. Thomas, and I am deeply appreciative of the GMRSD school committee for entrusting me with this critical leadership role. I eagerly anticipate collaborating with them over the forthcoming twelve months to ensure a smooth and productive period for our district.

Allow me to provide an overview of my professional trajectory, which has serendipitously led me to the Gill-Montague Regional School District. My career in education commenced over four decades ago as an elementary and middle school teacher. I dedicated eighteen fulfilling years to shaping young minds, initially in MSAD #61 in Maine, and subsequently within the Lenox, MA public schools. This foundational experience in the classroom provided me with invaluable insights into the daily lives of students and educators, fostering a profound understanding of their needs and aspirations.

My path then transitioned into school administration, where I served as a PK-6 principal for Shutesbury Elementary, followed by a K-4 principalship in Agawam. These roles allowed me to broaden my leadership skills, focusing on cultivating nurturing and effective learning environments for our youngest learners. I then transferred to Union #73 and Ralph C. Mahar Regional as an assistant superintendent and then full superintendent, a role that further honed my educational leadership, strategic planning and community engagement capabilities. Following my retirement from that position, I found myself drawn back to the field, spending two invigorating years as an interim superintendent for the five diverse school districts that comprise SAU #35 in the picturesque North Country of New Hampshire. It appears I am not particularly adept at retirement! I am also privileged to work with the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents, contributing to their induction program as a dedicated coach for new superintendents during their critical first three years. This ongoing involvement keeps me connected to the evolving landscape of educational leadership and allows me to mentor the next generation of superintendents.

As our community embarks on the important process of selecting a new permanent Superintendent, my role as your interim leader is unequivocally to facilitate a seamless and stable transition for our new district leader. We stand at a fascinating and challenging juncture in public education, with a multitude of changes on the horizon across local, State, and Federal levels. My overarching goal throughout this interim period is multi-faceted: to be an unwavering advocate for all children in our district, ensuring their well-being and academic success remain at the forefront of every decision; to serve as an effective and transparent communicator, fostering open dialogue and collaboration within our school community; and critically, to build upon the rich traditions and remarkable successes that have already defined our district.

I once again extend my sincere gratitude to the GMRSD School Committee for this incredible opportunity. I am genuinely enthusiastic about the next twelve months and the collaborative work we will undertake on behalf of the Gill-Montague students, staff, and community. I encourage you to please feel entirely comfortable introducing yourselves to me, and to approach me with any questions, concerns, or, indeed, to share points of pride regarding our schools and students. Together, through collective effort and shared vision, I am confident that we can further enhance the educational experience for all of our children.
