Sheffield Spotlight

What an exciting week at Sheffield Elementary School!

Thank you to the students for bringing their "biggest fans" to our Opening Ceremonies Open House! It was so great to see so many students with their families last night! We hope that you picked up a magnet with our SES contact information. We are a TEAM and recognize that home and school communication is so important! Please do not hesitate to reach out to us with any questions or concerns.

We would also like to thank the Family Resource Center, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Freedom Credit Union, Friends of Sheffield, and the SES cafeteria for setting up information tables.

Sheffield's Book Vending Machine Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

On Wednesday, September 28, all students attended class meetings. We recognized and celebrated those students that completed their summer reading with a certificate and a gold coin. Later in the morning, our "gold coin" recipients attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for our new book vending machine. The students were so excited and the hallway erupted with applause and cheering as the books dropped from the vending machine.

Each month, we will announce how a gold coin will be earned. Themes will include social emotional and academic goals such as kindness and literacy. Stay tuned as our October goal will be announced soon!

TURNERS FALLS - While most vending machines supply hungry tummies with junk food, the Gill-Montague Regional School District is serving up more wholesome food for thought. A small group of Sheffield Elementary School's most prolific summer readers joined staff and administrators to celebrate the unveiling of the district's first book vending machine Wednesday morning.

Learning and Creating Fossils with Ms. Neeley

Third graders, in Ms. Tully's class, are learning about fossils with Ms. Neeley, our STEM teacher. Students participated in a project-based learning assignment creating fossil layers. Fossil layers are fossils that formed in sedimentary rock. Sedimentary rock is rock that is formed in layers by the depositing and pressing of sediments on top of each other. Because sediments sometimes include once-living organisms, sedimentary rock often contains a lot of fossils. Fossils are once-living organisms that have been turned into rock, in which the shape or form of the organism can still be seen. To demonstrate the layers with the fossils, small groups added food coloring to each layer and added an object into the plaster. Next week the students will crack open the plaster to see the "fossil" formations that were created in each layer of the "sedimentary rock".

Friends of Sheffield

If you haven't heard, we have begun planning our first event of the year! We're hosting our first ever Trunk or Treat on Friday, October 28th in the Sheffield parking lot and Friends of Hillcrest will be joining us! Our Save the Date went home in backpacks recently and has all the preliminary details. If you'd like to decorate your car to hand out candy and/or have your kids participate in trick or treating, please sign up here. We need trick or treaters to RSVP to give decorators an idea of how much candy they will need to provide.

Thank you to all of the families who participated in our Events and Fundraisers survey. It was very helpful during our first meeting on Monday, September 26th. Meeting minutes can be found here. Our next meeting will be held on Monday, October 17th from 6:00-6:45 pm in the teachers' lounge. If you prefer to attend virtually, our meet link can be found here. If you plan to attend in-person, and need childcare, please let us know in advance. We can be contacted via email: friendsofsheffield@gmail.com.

Our Opt-Out fundraiser is still going on! It's perfect for families who are looking to contribute to FOS, but don't want to participate in traditional school fundraisers. If for some reason you haven't received our flier, you can find all the details here.

Lost and Found

There are a number of lost and found items already. They are located in the cafeteria. If your student is missing something, please have them look for it during the school day. Please label the items as that will help us return them to the correct student.
