H1N1 Flu Update Print
Written by Carl Ladd, Superintendent
As I hope everyone is aware, the school district has been diligently monitoring the spread of the H1N1 flu virus both regionally and locally.  The central office has been in daily contact with the building level nurses to monitor student and staff absences so that we can try to obtain the most accurate, up-to-date information as possible.  This is why we have been requesting that parents notify their child’s school if they are exhibiting flu-like symptoms so that we can continue to accurately monitor the situation.

Fall 2009 Influenza Guidance for Schools Print
Written by Department of Public Health

As the 2009-2010 school year begins, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is providing updated guidance for schools concerning H1N1 influenza, seasonal influenza, and influenza-like illness (ILI).  MDPH expects that both seasonal and H1N1 influenza will be circulating in the fall and is preparing for increased number of cases.  The main changes in the guidance since the spring of 2009 are: 1) the importance of early seasonal flu vaccination; 2) the availability of H1N1 influenza vaccine; and 3) the shorter isolation period for those with influenza-like illness (ILI).  The information provided is based on the most recent guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Our goal for the new school season is limiting transmission in schools in order to keep schools open and functioning as usual.

Supplemental Education Services Print
Written by Martin Espinola

AVAILABILITY OF IN-DISTRICT SCHOOL CHOICE AND SES SERVICES FOR ELIGIBLE SHEFFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS AND PARENTS

Because MCAS scores were not deemed adequate on certain tests in 2007 and 2008 at the Sheffield Elementary School, income eligible students in that school qualify for Supplemental Education Services. This is only true for students in the Sheffield Elementary School because of the percentage of students in that school that qualify for Title I funds. For more information, please call 413-863-3252.

For approved SES providers, go to the Department of Education’s “Find a Provider” page: http://www.doe.mass.edu/ses/search.asp

The Gill-Montague Regional School District is an approved SES provider and provides SES services at the Sheffield Elementary School as part of its 21st Century Learning Center after school program. This program is available to all Sheffield students throughout the school year free of charge.

In 2008, the number of Shefield students eligible for Supplemental Educational Services was 101.  As it turned out, 53 students participated in the program which is designed to improve students' academic performance.
