Dear Hillcrest Families,

Happy October!  These first few days of October have certainly brought seasonal weather along. Thank you for dressing your children in layers -- the mornings have been quite chilly! As you make that transition to warmer clothing, please be sure to label all of those sweatshirts, jackets, hats, etc.  Writing your child’s name in permanent marker somewhere on the garment will help to keep track of these important items. Now that October is here, it’s also time for our annual Open House. Please be sure to join us for this very special event next Thursday, October 10th at 5:30. Wondering what you can expect at Open House? Here is a sneak preview:

  • You will meet your child’s teachers and other staff members like our school nurse, our cafeteria staff and members of our special education team.

  • You will learn more about your child’s grade level curriculum and classroom routines.

  • You will visit your child’s classroom and see examples of their learning.

  • You will have a chance to connect with other Hillcrest families and meet your child’s new friends.

  • You will have a chance to connect with Friends of Hillcrest, the Gill-Montague Education Fund and other community groups.

  • You will learn more about Leveled Texts and Guided Reading, our new math program:Bridges, and our Diverse Books Collection.

A few important news items:

  • October is Fire Prevention Month.  This morning, each grade level enjoyed a Fire Safety presentation led by Captain Kyle and Firefighter Luke of the Turners Falls Fire Department.  Be sure to ask your child what they learned about smoke detectors and family fire safety plans.

  • There is No School on Monday, October 14th in observance of Columbus Day.

  • Our October All School Meeting will take place at 9:00 on Friday, October 25th.

  • Looking ahead to November . . . Parent Conferences will be held on Thursday, November 7th and Friday, November 8th.   Be on the lookout for more information from your child’s teacher about the conference schedule.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend --

Sarah Burstein, Principal
