 Hillcrest Elementary School

Friday News

May 17, 2019

Dear Hillcrest Families,

It was such a treat to recognize our Hillcrest volunteers at All School Meeting today! We are grateful to the many volunteers who contribute to our school community.  We are lucky to have parent volunteers who help out with classroom activities, donate classroom supplies, and help to organize and staff special events like Read Across Hillcrest and the Hillcrest Story Walk. Volunteers who are part of Friends of Hillcrest, the Hillcrest Playground Committee, and the Hillcrest School Council bring new ideas for fundraisers and special events. In addition to parent volunteers, Hillcrest benefits from the volunteer work of community members who organize our Box Tops for Education, lead us at All School Sing each month, and bring their talents and expertise to science and art projects in our classrooms.  Every Hillcrest staff member and student is deeply thankful for our amazing volunteers!

A few additional notes:

  • This week, second grade student ambassadors from Sheffield Elementary joined our first graders at morning meeting to answer a range of questions about second grade. Our first graders were so excited to welcome these special guests! Next week, our first graders will be guests at Sheffield’s All School Sing.

  • Hillcrest kindergarten and first grade students participated in a lunchtime Lockdown Drill on Wednesday. In this short safety drill, students practiced evacuating from the cafeteria to the kitchen area. This drill lasted about 3 minutes in total.  After the drill, the students really enjoyed chatting with State Trooper Jim Carmichael and School Resource Officer Dan Miner.

  • All of our Hillcrest students participated in a fire drill on Thursday morning.  Our students and teachers are super-efficient during fire drills and Deputy Chief Ambo, Captain Kyle and Firefighter Nick of the Turners Falls Fire Department were very impressed by how quickly, quietly and safely our very young students are able to exit the building.

  • Be sure to mark you calendars with these special events:

    • First Grade at Sheffield All School Sing -- May 23rd

    • Preschool Field Trip -- May 24th

    • First Grade Visit to Sheffield -- May 28th

    • Hillcrest Field Day -- June 4th

    • First Grade Field Trip -- June 6th

  • And a final note, the Gill-Montague Facilities & Maintenance Department is hoping to fill two part-time positions:  one is for an on-call custodian to cover vacations or sick days in the evenings.  The other is a part time grounds assistant for 3 hours per day from April to November. If you or someone you know is interested in one of these positions, please contact Heath Cummings,  GMRSD Facilities & Energy Manager at (413)-863-3261 or check out the district website at www.gmrsd.org.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend --
