Ask your childs teacher how you can help at home with reading and math practice! Every two minutes you spend with your child at home practicing math facts or reading to your child and asking questions about a story doubles or triples the benefit of the teachers instruction in school. You are your childs first and most important teacher. When you take time for academic learning at home, you send a message about how much you value and support your childs efforts at school. As you know, we always coordinate our school Book Fair with parent conferences. This is a great opportunity to pick out a book with your child that you can read together at home. Make it a book that stretches your childs reading ability so that you can challenge them at home to a new level. This Tuesday, 94 of our students received Book Fair vouchers worth $5 each in recognition of their successful completion of our summer reading program. Congratulations to each of these students and a special thank you to our donors Ken Schoen and Jane Tregere who made these book awards and other summer reading material available to us. I would also like to recognize teachers Diane Gonsalves and Sharon Brower and our Summer Program Director, Tova Neugut, for their assistance with this effort. Special recognition is also due to Carol Star, our paraprofessional librarian, who each year goes above and beyond the call of duty to make each Book Fair successful for students and the school as a whole. I also want to personally wish each and every one of you a pleasant Thanksgiving Day break. Classroom News Grade 3 Mrs. Rollins class wants you to know that we are of the way through the school year! Can you believe that? Its gone by so fast, and weve done so much! In ELA we continue to get better at writing complete sentences and can separate sentences into subjects and predicates. We are also able to analyze words by their base words and ed and ing endings. Our last story, The Lost and Found, an entertaining fantasy of three students who got lost in the Lost and Found, was enjoyed by all students! Were learning test taking strategies through working on the first theme test together. In Math, students are learning place value through 1,000s and will be rounding and comparing numbers this week. We re currently studying rocks, volcanoes and earthquakes in Science with Mrs. Rollins. In Social Studies , with Mrs. Wood, were learning all about our state and region. Im looking forward to meeting with all of my parents at Parent/Teacher Conferences on November 15th and 16th. See you there! News from Room2: October has been an exciting month for Mrs. Woods class. We are looking forward to November and completing a unit of Geography in Social Studies. We know all the New England states, and are working to locate eleven different places in Massachusetts. Now as we study Massachusetts, we will know where we are talking about. We will be beginning a unit on Colonial Life in Massachusetts soon. If you walk by our room in the morning you are bound to see us reading, reading and then reading some more. We read daily with our partners for fluency practice. We work with Mrs. Wood, Ms. Stone, Ms. Coutu and Gonsalves in our power reading circles. We also read from our book boxes which contain books we are interested in reading on our own. We love hearing stories from our Author under Study read to us by Ms. Stone. We finished E.B. Whites Charlottes Web, and are reading The Trumpet of the Swan, Our homework on Monday night is always to read and record our reading in our reading logs, but more reading at home is always good. Students love to be read to, as well as reading out loud to parents, siblings, neighbors, grandparents, any relatives, stuffed animals, any audience. Please make time to sit and read with your child as often as your schedule allows. Stop by our bulletin board in the hall and check out your students writing. We wrote letters to warn Tom Turkey about Thanksgiving. Wishing all our families a very happy Thanksgiving, Sharyn Wood Grade 4  Greetings from Room Six, Time flies when youre having fun! Thats just what weve been doing in Room 6. We have been steadily traveling through our Journeys theme and visiting many interesting stops along the way. In our small reading groups we learned, among other things, many interesting facts about the Titanic. We organized our thoughts using big KWL charts. Make sure you check them out when you come for parent teacher conferences. During our writing time we were introduced to the hamburger model of writing a paragraph. We used juicy words to describe. Ask your child about why we dont allow peanut butter. Then we all wrote a personal narrative. These interesting and funny narratives are now hanging in Room 6. Be sure to find your childs narrative. Now we are finishing our personal letters to our pen pals in Boston. Ask your child what their pen pals name is. We have also started our Fourth Grade Yearbooks. This is a yearlong project of Mrs. LeBlancs. Much like scrapbooking, the students create pages that showcase their best work and milestones of Fourth Grade. During Math we have spent time saying, ordering, and rounding numbers up to 999,999! We worked in small groups and played games involving one or more of the skills from the Grade Four Massachusetts Frameworks. This month we are concentrating on Geometry and starting to write about our math understandings. These writing assignments will mirror open response questions found on the Grade-Four MCAS tests. In Social Studies we have moved from world geography to mapping. We will start this week talking about the Compass Rose. This learning will carry over into Art class, as the Art Teacher will work with the students to create their own Compass Rose. Then we will work on mapping our neighborhoods. In closing I would like to let you know that we have some parents volunteering in our classroom. Lliam Carltons mom Christine comes in every other Friday to teach us some Chinese. Miss Butler It is hard to believe that one-third of the year has passed but the students in Mrs. Hazlett's class have worked hard and have shown good progress with both their academic work and social responsibilities. We have completed the first theme in our reading book called Journeys and have traveled around the world through literature. Because so many of our stories took place on the west coast we have focused our Social Studies and Science work on the unique aspects of the Pacific Coast states. I have recently assigned our first book report so you should be seeing your child reading a mystery and preparing a project for the due date of December 15. Room 10 has been busy traveling with our reading program weve learned about Japan, Alaska and Iditarod Race, and the tragic story of the Titanic. We were also able, by video, to join scientist Robert Ballard on his voyage of finding the wreck of the Titanic two miles below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean. Were off to a year of journeys and discoveries! Science experiments have started with the potential of growing decomposers on bread slices, and also observing different kinds of fruit for changes over a long period of time. Grade 5 5th Grade December News from Room #20, Amy Bernard, Rebecca Linnell, Bridget Luccinni, and Friends. We are more than 1/3 of the way into our school year. This months curricular activities have been wild - literally! Our adventures are wrapping up in our literature theme, Natures Fury, and the theme test is almost complete. We have explored volcanoes and the make up of the earth and its atmosphere (earth science, physical science and geography). We have covered much ground as we wound our way through the literary genres of expository non-fiction, realistic fiction and fantasy. Please feel free to pay us a visit and see learning in action. One of our newest ventures (and scariest to some!) has us delving into the world of fractions, decimals and percents. As in the way of most new things, with knowledge comes understanding and comfort. As we approach the winter season of darkness, I would like to wish you and your families a Happy Thanksgiving, filled with light and laughter. Mrs. Guy-Greenes class: Busy, busy, busy!! That about says it all as this marking period comes to an end. The children have just finished the first theme, Natures Fury, in their literature series. This theme covered three major stories on natural disasters. Learning to stay calm and safe was discussed in length throughout these stories. This theme integrated nicely with our earth science studies in science. These fifth graders are certainly knowledgeable about the ever changing surface of our Earth. Next in literature we will do several mini lessons on Tall Tales and then start Theme Two called Give It All Youve Got. This theme will center on people who show courage in the face of a challenge. In Math we are well underway with chapter two which covers multiplication. The children have been directed to practice their math facts for quick recall. I cant express enough how very important this is. Just five minutes a night will make an incredible difference with a childs confidence level. PLEASE talk to your child about this commitment and assist when needed. THANKS!! In social studies our tour of the United States is over and your children have designed a travel brochure about their favorite region. The class also created their own chapter test with each student contributing one multiple choice question for the test. It will be fun to see how they all do!! For now that is all. Thank you all for attending these important meetings. Heres what we are currently working on In math we have been learning a little pre-algebra creating and solving different kinds of expressions. This will lead us into multiplying large decimals and whole numbers. In Every Day Counts the November calendar pieces are polygons. So we are learning to identify shapes and patterns. Your children are becoming more efficient at partner reading. It is taking less time for everyone to find their spot in the room and settle down to read with his/her partner. Students are also getting better at writing about their reading. During this week of conferences students will be taking the integrated theme test for Natures Fury. When you are here for our conference, I hope you get a chance to read your childs descriptive writing piece. Presently they are on the bulletin boards in the hallway. In Science and Social Studies we are studying maps. We found locations on globes by using map terminology such as longitude and latitude, hemispheres, degrees and coordinates. We read how difficult it was for cartographers to represent a spherical world accurately on a flat map, such as the Mercator projection map. To learn first hand just how difficult this was, students drew images on oranges and tried to get the peel off in one big piece. Then they tried to flatten out the peels. As they flattened the pieces they could see the images become distorted. It was frustrating for many, and we were just experimenting with oranges! Studying about maps not only helps us understand how to get from one place to another, it also helps give us a glimpse into the past by showing us what people understood about the world at various points in history. Learning is so much fun! I hope everyone has a restful and peaceful Thanksgiving holiday. Grade 6  Salutations from Room 9: In keeping with our classroom theme, Imagine, we have been imagining a myriad of possibilities in reading, geography, math, current events, etc. When we constructed a heartbeat for the novel Edward Tulane, we were able to imagine a rabbit that began as self-centered, but through lifes trials and tribulations learned to care for others. A life lesson was learned for us as well while reading this book. As we imagined ourselves as mathematicians, many concepts were explored. Multiplication expressions were built upon our foundation of addition expressions. The Order of Operations were learned so we could know the universal language of equations to make us aware of how to solve difficult operations. Learning exponents, divisibility rules, prime factorization and how to find the least common multiples of numbers will help us solve many types of problems, which will cross our paths this year. The Greenfield Recorder has been delivering enough papers for each child in our class this year. It is a tremendous opportunity to teach about current events as well as teaching about facts vs. fiction, and how to make your own judgment. The newspaper also lend itself to teaching many reading skills. As we learn about each category of the paper, we are able to picture where some of the news is coming from. We will continue to read the paper and explore all it has to offer.
