Our Curriculum

Reading and Language
Arts
We approach the
teaching of reading and writing in an interdisciplinary way. We
view reading and writing under the umbrella of literacy
which needs to occur across all areas of the curriculum. Children
learn about the relationtionship between the spoken and printed
word through a variety of approaches. Some are: learning rhymes
& songs, journal writing, participating in group shared reading
and publishing experiential stories. As learning progresses,
children are brought into more formal reading and writing activities.
Our classrooms are language and print 'rich' settings to support
each child's literacy development. |

Mathematics
Using real objects
helps children grasp and apply mathematical concepts in meaningful
ways. Children learn about numbers, measurement, problem
solving, geometry and time by manipulating objects; which helps
them transfer their learning to paper and pencil computations.
Again, our classrooms are filled with a wide range of manipulatives
to support counting, comparing, graphing, weighing, constructing,
etc.

Science
Each teacher
assumes responsibility for presenting particular units of science
study. There is one area that all teachers include and that
is Nature Study. We have the benefit of an 'outdoor' classroom
which is a nature site within walking distance from the school.
All classses visit the site at least three times a year
to discover and explore vegetation, birds and animal activity.

Art
Art
is an important source of learning and self-expression. Art
takes place on a daily basis in the classroom throughout all aspects
of the curriculum. Once a week, the art teacher and classroom
teacher work together on projects that provide even greater awareness
of the relevance of the visual arts. Our position is to promote
arts in learning. We take great pride in children's work
by displaying their creations throughout the school.

Movement & Drama
A unique offering at
Montague Center is a movement & drama period once a week for all
classes. We have an artist on staff who coordinates movement
& drama experiences with academic learning in the classrooms.
This program compliments our overall efforts to establish
the arts as an essential curriculum component.

Physical Education
Our physical education
program is designed to teach children movement, coordination,
balance and games. The program is oriented toward individual
development and cooperative group work. Classes take place
outdoors for as long as the weather permits. Please remember
to have your child wear sneakers on gym days - Tuesday & Wednesday.

Music
The music program is
designed to broaden children's knowledge about music and teach
some fundamentals about rhythm, notes and beat. Two musical
performances take place each year in celebration of music's importance
in our lives. A winter concert takes place in December during
the school day. In the spring, all classes are combined
in a musical pageant that comes close to an off broadway production.
Both presentations are a lot of fun for both the performers
and audience.
