Have you ever wondered how we approach learning here at the Hillcrest Elementary School?  Simply put, we are child-centered in our teaching.  That is, the materials and opportunities for learning in the classroom are based upon children's interests and abilities.

Our goals for young children are to help them have many successful learning experiences in order to become motivated about learning and school.  We are a school providing education for children ranging from preschool through grade two.  Because of this, we feel strongly about our commitment to a strong, positive start to school.  We believe a postive beginning will set the stage for successful lifelong learning.

Today, as we begin to break new ground through educational reform, we have two very important goals to work on together with the improvement of our children's education.

First, we must create a climate of positive social relationships among all members of our school community.  This means working together, parents and teachers alike, helping children to learn the value of respect and goodwill toward peers, family members and teachers.

Second, as a community of learners, both adults and children must value the importance of knowledge of the world through books and print.  In this way, we can assure the strongest possible development of literacy in our children.

In closing, we believe that a partnership with parents can bring the best possible success for children in our school.  We look forward to a lasting and productive partnership with you as you join us in the important job of educating all our young children.

Communicating...It's important!!

The teachers and principal are eager to have ongoing communication with parents and other family members who are important in our student's lives.

Parents are encouraged to call the school to speak with their child's teacher or two set up a conference.  Sometimes, parents will drop by the classroom to see the teacher.  We make every effort to develop a dialogue with you about your child!

Classroom Visits

Occasionally, a parent would like to visit their child's classroom.  Please contact the office so that your child's teacher can make an arrangement for you to visit.

Volunteers

Parents and community members have a long tradition of giving of their valuable time to help here at the Hillcrest School.  On special occasions such as field trips and special events, parent help is solicited by a notice sent home with your child.  There are many ways parents may volunteer their time.  Please contact the school for information.

Open House

In October we hold our annual Open House.  This is an opportunity for you and your child to visit the school and classrooms and see special displays of children's work.

Parent Conferences

Parent-teacher conferences are formally held two times a year, once in November and again in March.  These conferences coincide with the time your child receives his or her report card.  During this scheduled visit, teachers share your child's progress in school, your child's portfolio and work samples.  This is a time for parents to discuss their concerns and impressions of their child as a student.  Once again, the teachers and the principal are always available at anytime throughout the year to talk with you about your child.

Report Cards

Report cards are issued in November and March to coincide with parent conferences and again in June when school is about to break for the summer.

Child Study

Sometimes it is necessary to have additional information about a child's growth and development.  This may be because the child is experiencing some difficulty in the classroom with learning or emotional adjustment.  Because our school is dedicated to giving children the best possible start in school we will invite selected staff, the classroom teacher and the parents to a meeting known as the Child Study.  During this meeting the group may decide to seek educational or other testing or try some different techniques for helping the child to succeed.  Parents are welcome to bring along a friend or another family member to help in the decision making process.

Family Events

The Hillcrest School holds special events for families through the school year.  These include the PTO School Carnival in the fall, a Family Literacy Night in January, the Spring Concert in May and the Parent Lunch and Curriculum Fair in June.  We also sponsor special evenings for parents on topics in interest to them.  In the past we have had speakers and workshops on Attention Deficit Disorder, Responsive Classroom and Family Meetings.  Each year the Hillcrest School makes it a goal to expand the number of family events offered.
